On May
20, 2007, we leave Los Alamos early afternoon, after a hectic morning trying
to finish odds and ends, including trying to get on the net to cancel our
various subscriptions (AllVantage internet service, Blockbuster, etc…), and
a stop at the county park to purge the holding tanks, fill up on water, and
put some air in the tires. The weather is very stormy, as it has been all
season so far. It rained hard in Los Alamos this morning, then on and off
on the road all day. Cloudy, dark day. We drive to our usual Wal Mart parking
lot in Durango, CO, getting there at 7PM.
The next
day, we go to town and spend the morning at the three climbing stores. We
leave town early afternoon after having lunch at our usual burrito joint (Nini's
near the train station). We make it to a few miles past past Moab that night
after a brief stop in town (at the two climbing stores, what else?) and find
a nice flat spot in the desert along Highway 191.

On the
third day, we go for a short bike ride (testing Lucie's hands - she's recovering
from carpal tunnel related problems) on dirt roads and cattle tracks around
the bus. Fun. Beautiful country, mostly sunny skies, and not too windy yet.
Back to the bus, we get the bikes back on the Jeep, get the bus ready to go,
and finally leave our nice desert spot around 11:30AM. We're driving to Cottonwood
Canyon today. We make it there late afternoon, hitting busy traffic in Salt
Lake. We leave the bus on a Ski Bus/Park and Ride parking lot to go explore
the campgrounds. We drive up Little Cottonwood first and go check out the
first campground 4.2 miles up the road. It's small, tight, with steep drives...
this won't do with our bus. The host suggests we try the Spruce Campground
in Big Cottonwood Canyon. It's quite a bit further (9.1 miles up that canyon)
but the road is a bit less steep and the campground more reasonable for a
large bus. By the time we get back to the bus and drive back to camp, it is
pretty late (8PM). Tomorrow, we're going climbing!
